Mission Statement |
|
We
do not believe that the warehousing of pet birds is in the best
interest of the bird and is in fact inhumane. While there are such
shelters [warehousing birds] in Arizona we are opposed to their method of
incarcerating for life these beautiful creatures. Man has domesticated
parrots therefore making them a part of our family. For generations they
have been captive breed, hand fed, taught to talk and interact with us.
While wild caught parrots will be around for decades and in some cases are
still brought into our country, they have become accustomed to human
contact. These birds have lost the ability to forage for food and if
released to fend for themselves they die of starvation, become the target
of other animals or some other tragedy. Never simply release a pet
bird!
Older
birds, special physical needs birds, birds with
psychological disabilities
and birds with behavioral issues remain in our facility for an extended
period of time and in some cases take permanent residence at Arizona
Exotic Bird Rescue. The majority of the birds we have the joy of
caring for are placed in carefully screened adoptive homes. We offer
people the security of knowing that their bird will be cared for and that
time will be taken when finding a new home with a sincere, dedicated and
appropriate person. Adoptions are monitored for a period of time to assure
the adoption is successful for both you and your new bird. In the event
you find that you are unable to care for your bird or are incompatible
with the bird, the bird would be returned to Arizona Exotic Bird Rescue.
Parrot rescue and adoption is not a sideline for us. Our birds are cared
for around-the-clock by people solely dedicated to their concerns and
well-being.
Parrots
and songbirds are now the third most popular pets in the United States
following dogs and cats. With that popularity come many problems. The life
expectancy of some parrots exceeds that of their owners. Divorce,
relocation, an illness or unforeseen difficulties may be a factor in why
our rescue is a necessary solution for you. Sometimes well-intentioned
people purchase a bird only to find themselves unable to cope with the
demands, nature and habits of the bird. Many parrots will bite, scream
incessantly, destroy your home or resort to self- mutilation. We are here
to help you.
We
happily accept all birds that know the companionship of people. Native
species wild birds will be referred to another rescue that is licensed to
care for them. Not all Arizona wild birds are native to our region and
some have become pets. We will consider accepting such birds on a
case-by-case basis. We are not equipped to accept farm birds or game birds
at this time.
